Tutoring (Private Courses)

Tutoring or Private training is tailored to the needs of you and your dog!

How Do I Know if Four Legged Scholars is a Good Fit for Us?

During the first session, we evaluate if we are a good match for each other.  We believe that we need to be an energetic match for you and your dog, so there is no pressure to work with us.  The first session lasts for two hours.  During these two hours, we evaluate your dog and your goals.  After getting clear about your needs, we recommend the number of tutoring sessions that will be best to reach your goals.  If there is time remaining after the evaluation, we will begin training your dog during the first session as well.

Where Do We Meet?

If you are within 20 minutes from the Millcreek area in SLC then I will come to your home (Generally this includes:  Downtown SLC, Millcreek, Murray Holiday, Sandy, Taylorsville, Cottonwood Heights, some of West Valley, etc.). If you are farther than a 20 minute drive, we will meet at a designated location of our choice.

There are times when our location may change each week depending on your goals. If you are wanting to work with distractions then we may meet at a different outdoor park each week.

When is Tutoring a Good Choice?

  • When your dog has a behavior issue such as aggression or fear behavior.
  • When you want the training curriculum to focus on certain commands such as a strong focal point on leash walking with distractions or come.
  • When you want more one-on-one attention than you will recieve in a group class setting.
  • When you have a busy life and a schedule that is not very flexible.  We can meet at different scheduled times each week if needed.

What is Covered in the Tutoring Course?

  • An evaluation of you and your dog's goals.
  • Training for the commands and the behaviors that needs to addressed. This can be obedience or a behavior issue.
  • You will learn how your thoughts, energy and emotions affect how your dog responds to you.  We will be looking at the holistic picture so that we can create long lasting results between you and your dog.
  • Most people meet once a week for an hour each week where we work with you and your dog together.  You will be given homework so you must be committed to working with your dog outside of the training sessions to create results.
  • We also cover what your dog is communicating to you.  Many times our dogs are giving messages.  We will help you understand what your dog is here to teach you as well.

What Others are Saying About Tutoring:

"Jasper, Benny, Oliver and I say you are the BEST, Johanna!!  We had a great time with you today and learned so much!!  Thank you so much for such clear, positive instruction with so much love!" - Marla Bosko (Jack Russell, Shih Tzu, and Terrier Mix)

.

"The biggest thing for me was the difference in our walks.  I am more comfortable and I see that he is happier.  It is amazing the shift that was created in just 10 weeks of training." Then just two weeks after our last session: "He seems to be doing a lot better, especially on his walks which makes me very happy.  He is finally letting my dad hold him so that makes both of them very happy!  And my sister Stefanie even took him into a store the other day and he did not bark at any strangers and let a woman come up to him and pet him!  I am truly amazed with the little guy.  He also is getting more comfortable with strangers in fewer visits which I am really stoked about! We are still working on getting him more comfortable with strangers and dogs on our walks, and we are still working on the commands.  He is barking less at the window now which I love :)  Thanks for everything Johanna you are amazing!" - Sarah Minen with Winston (Miniature Pinscher)

“Johanna worked with us one on one to make sure we were absorbing what she was teaching us in order to accomplish the goals we had set for training.  She is a great and patient teacher, demonstrating and working through each of the steps necessary repetitiously until she was comfortable seeing that we were making progress.” – Peggy Blackman with Jack (Shi-Tzu)
