Q: How many years has Four Legged Scholars been training?
A: Four Legged Scholars has been in business since 2004. Johanna Teresi, the trainer, began dog training as child in 1989.
Q: What is the education and experience of Four Legged Scholars?
A: Johanna Teresi, the trainer, received a Bachelors in Psychology (with a strong focus on animal learning) from Ohio Wesleyan University. Through majoring in Psychology Johanna has a strong knowledge base on how dogs learn. She has also attended numerous dog training seminars and read numerous dog training books. Both seminars and books support reward based training, and she learned from trainers such as Karen Pryor, Jean Donaldson, Trish King, Ian Dunbar, Patricia McConnell, Emma Parsons, and many more! Johanna also has mentored trainers and continues to educate herself.
Johanna Teresi is also a certified NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) Coach. This supports Johanna in communicating clearly with her clients. She can also lead clients through processes that help shift energy and emotions. As the emotions and energy of the client shift, the dog also begins to react in a more friendly and obedient manner.

Q: How do I know whether to do group training or private training (tutoring)?
A: Do you learn best in a group setting or do you learn better in a one-on-one setting? Remember, in a group class, the attention will be divided between all of the students. In private training, the attention is only on the owner and the dog.
Do you want to just train basic commands or do you have specific goals in mind? Group classes are great to get an overview of all basic commands including: come, leash walking, stay, leave it, etc. Private training will have a focal point on the training goals that you have for you and your dog.
Is your dog friendly with other dogs and people? If you answered, no to this question then private training is the definite way to go.
How old is your dog? If you own a puppy, the puppy will receive minor socialization by being around other dogs and people in the classroom. So if you are looking for some socialization with your friendly dog or puppy, a group class could be a great option. Remember that play sessions do not occur in the group classes.
Q: Where is Four Legged Scholars located?
A: The Freshman Obedience Class is held at Central City Recreation Center, 615 South 300 East, SLC 84111
Many of the other group classes are held in the outdoor environment. The location of the class varies depending on the class. Contact Four Legged Scholars for more details.
Private (Tutoring) training is generally held in the owners home. Four Legged Scholars will drive in any direction for 20 minutes from the Millcreek area. If you live more than 20 minutes from Millcreek, then you can drive to SLC and meet with Four Legged Scholars at a designated location.
Q: What type of training methods does Four Legged Scholars use?
A: Four Legged Scholars uses reward-based training or positive reinforcement. Most clients do use clicker training with Four Legged Scholars. A dog does not become treat dependent from using treats as a reward. As the behaviors / commands become learned the treats are faded out.
Q: Does Four Legged Scholars offer Board and Train?
A: We offer a simliar program called Study Hall. In this program, Four Legged Scholars comes to your dog's home and we train the dog for the owner. The owner then meets with the trainer multiple times to make sure that the commands are fully generalized over.
We believe a dog learns best when it is trained in its home environment and will remember the commands best if they are trained in the environment where they will be naturally requested. As a result, we prefer Study Hall over Board and Train.
Q: Does Four Legged Scholars need to have experience with my particular breed of dog?
A: Many owners want to make sure that Four Legged Scholars has experience training the breed of dog they own such as a Bernese Mountain Dog, Siberian Husky, etc. The way dogs learn is independent of breed. Yes, certain breeds have certain personalities, characteristics and instincts. However, it is not important for your trainer to have experience with your dog breed. It is important for them to understand the psychology of the dog.
